How to load and balance a caravan

13 May 2026

A badly loaded caravan snakes, even behind the right car. Balance matters as much as total weight.

Where to put the weight

Heavy items go low and as close to the axle as possible, never overhanging the rear. The noseweight must stay within the range set by the maker: too low and the caravan snakes; too high and the car front axle goes light.

Before you drive

Check tyre pressures loaded, spread weight left to right, secure anything that can move. To stay within limits on the car side, compare capacities with the comparison tool or the Ford Kuga page.

General guidance; always refer to your caravan handbook.
